Why do you consider General Services to be the wrong department? Do you feel that the function is not being supported well either in terms of the department providing support for your needs or being able to exert appropriate influence to make sure the functions occur properly?

> 1. What would be the right department to be under?

I have seen records management placed in many different organizations including:

Real Estate
Facilities
CIO's office
Legal/General Counsel
Compliance
Audit
History (city government)

The right place is wherever you get proper support and can exert the right amount of influence. In my experience as a corporate records manager for a number of years, I had great success working under an SVP for Corporate Real Estate (function included Facilities/General Services) because my manager had influence in the organization and because of the skills I had allowed me to communicate well with everyone from the departmental records liaisons to upper management.

> 2. Would it be appropriate, if we are under the Records Management Dept. (our proposal) or under the Information Governance Department as suggested by our management. What's the advantages / disadvantages of both?

If I understand you correctly, you are proposing a separate department. This could be good if it gets you (Records Management) name recognition and a place close to management, but on the other hand, and especially if you are dealing with electronic records, a place within Information Governance might be appropriate

> 3. To whom should the department report to and why?

See the answer to No. 1, above.

> 4. Is there anybody who can help me with a sample of an organization chart of Records Management dept. or Records Management under a broader group such as Information Governance?

I don't have on a decent organizational chart of either scenario available, but you can contact me directly and I can try to describe some scenarios, if you don't get anything from others on the list. You might consider finding a textbook, or guideline at the ARMA Bookstore https://www.arma.org/eweb/DynamicPage.aspx?WebKey=42266D29-1871-4086-BA03-7676A83E4865 .

Good luck
