Hi Peter,

<snip>
I 'respectfully' ask that you enumerate for us the reasons why using an
email tool such as YG is a horrible way to colloborate since with YG a
SINGLE email address is used for the sending of messages?
</snip>

In no particular order, and by no means a complete list:
- Too many attachments sent to people who don't need them
- Versions of attachments
- How to consolidate comments sent in the body of the email, sent as
marked-up changes to the attachment, sent as NON-marked-up changes to the
attachment
- How to consolidate comments sent to different versions of an attachment
- The siloing of messages to only those involved in the thread (and to only
those parts of the thread they are involved in, i.e. sent or received)
- The difficulty of managing comments in messages and individual users'
inboxes
- The relative difficulty of accessing messages, attachments, and comments
while away from your desk/computer (in other words, with a wiki I can review
and potentially edit using my iPhone; I can't do that with email because my
corporate Exchange makes it difficult to sync my iPhone and in many
organizations it isn't allowed at all)
- Some people cannot access YG from their work - any messages from a
yahoo.com account or any messages sent on behalf of a person (as lists and
YG are) get blocked

<snip>
and so you find it easier to send the attachment then a link to the
document. sheesh

well since you don't get the emails from digest user complaining about the
retained messages let me suggest that you take the digest version of the
listserv for at least two weeks to see what it is like (edited for brevity)

failing to edit out previous messages is downright lazy.
</snip>

I should note first that I was part of a list last year that routinely gets
200+ messages PER DAY, and most of the folks on the list didn't edit but
simply replied. So yeah, I know a thing or two about "digest spam".

More importantly, you completely, 100%, absolutely missed my point. I agree
with you - and I do it except for those (rare these days) instances when I
forget. I also send links rather than attachments. But I shouldn't have to
tell YOU that many users don't - just like they don't send links. I think it
would be a beautiful thing if all listserv users edited messages to only
include pertinent information and then only if necessary. I also think it
would be a great thing to send links instead of attachments - I recommended
that very thing to a client this week in fact. But I also know that today
that's still the exception rather than the rule.

Oh, and "respectfully" is just that - particularly after the issues last
week with having my loyalty and motives questioned. I have tried to be
respectful in every response I have ever posted to the list, even when I
strongly disagree with someone or when someone is not respectful to me (such
as your questioning this in your message). I think any reasonable observer
reviewing any posting I have ever done in this forum (or any other for that
matter) would conclude that I am respectful, that I have no real agenda
other than promoting the profession and its continued development and
maturation, and that I have nothing to hide.

So again, respectfully submitted on behalf of myself and no other company,
organization, association, entity, or board of directors,

jesse
