Thanks for pointing this out, Larry. I am eager to see if they continue the
practice. I'm going to pass this along to my students.
This is going too far. Even if they say they will not hold it against an
applicant if they don't answer, human nature being what it is ... they won't
be happy with the person who refuses to respond.
It makes sense that HR would do a web search or Google an applicant for
information, but I think it's up to the applicant to play up such membership
if they feel it will work in their best interests. For example, graduates
often set up portfolio sites to assist with their job search. Membership in
social networking sites or web groups, especially passwords and id, should
never be requested.
