Hi Lee,

Thanks for your thoughtful reply. I recommended the Montana & Cunningham book, too, but neglected to recommend the handbook. I will pass that along. Those who are not records managers have a difficult time understanding the concept of records retention (even calling it document retention), so it's good when they ask for assistance and allow us the opportunity to share our expertise. 

As far as document retention versus records retention - a related topic has come up recently as a potential ARMA whitepaper. Mimi Dionne is taking the lead on that, which will explore the line of information custody between document control and records management.
