I chose an indefinite ('ind' or 'keep forever' ) retention period for
'policies and procedures', wherever they may be created (not just in HR).
The original suggestion from consultants was a superseded approach which
means you only ever have the current version. I think that's folly due
to litigation risks.

Implementing is hard if the company doesn't already clearly define what is a
'policy', 'process', or 'procedure'. Government organizations seem to be
better at this than non-government. My guidance to people who insist their
policies and procedures are living documents that are always being
superseded is to only lock down and keep forever 'full integer' revisions
eg. keep versions 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 forever but let minor revisions (eg version
2.3 to 2.4) overwrite.
