Think more of the value of the content when assigning a retention period or
categorizing communications. Doesn't matter what form of "container" (aka
the electronic envelope) it comes in, what matters is what it's regarding
how long it needs to be kept.

If you have a retention it's important that it applied equally to all
content that meets the definition of a record to ensure your program remains
in compliance with your schedule.

Other considerations would include ensuring there is a policy that clearly
defines what IM and TM can and cannot be used for- in your line of business
thee are issues potentially related to privacy or sensitive content that you
may want to limit the use of certain forms of communication you can't
properly capture and manage.
