This is hilarious, but all too typical - a lot of my colleagues shake
their heads in disbelief (often with expressions of drop-jawed "no
way!") when I tell them war stories such as this one. But as a vendor
in the document management and recovery business, it's stuff like this
that's my bread and butter.....

from it I suspect the original purchase agreements were sent to the
vault
for protection as a vital record. but the statement above tells me that

'legal assistant' needs some training as to what the various documents
in
the file are for. I suspect that the file contains correspondence.
addendums
to the agreement and other information that could prove useful in case
of a
lawsuit or dispute.
not sure how your retention schedule reads, but I would make sure that
for
purchase agreements it includes a statement that says something to the
effect " may include correspondence, invoice copies, addendums and other
records related to the performance of the agreement. Original signed
purchase agreement is stored in Finance Dept vault as part of Vital
Records
protection program" just a suggestion
