It's a pity, but we cannot help it...
Use it as another opportunity to introduce yourself and your service.
From another hand, it is possible that Legal has received new instructions, but, as usual does not inform the person responsible for it.
If something was already destroyed without your knowledge, prepare a memo to your boss and to boss of that person who did it.
At least, you protect yourself when the boss will ask why he/she was not informed.
And again, use the situation to check your corporate policies and procedures, and, possibly, involve person responsible for corporate policies and procedures, and it would be helpful too.
