This is something I have never even thought about. Not thinking about SD
cards for anything other tha moving photos from camera to computer and your
response, I am lead to ask a question. Could an electronic file like a
Word document be saved to an SD card and moved to another computer?

Hi Ray,
I thought this was a very interesting question and was moved to do a bit
of Googling.
Found some interesting discussion threads:
(especially the idea of asking Yahoo for tips on keeping SD cards as
evidence...)

I've no idea how common it would be, to use SD cards as the main storage
medium. But in my experience, most average users give little thought to the
potential life span of online/offline storage options.
The SD Association does note that their technology "...is a bridge media
allowing a card to transfer data from one device to another." Which suggests
it is not intended to be used for long-term storage.

Hope this is helpful.
Let me know if you find any statistics on SD cards for storage.
Kind regards

Subject: Storage of Photographs on SD Cards

I was on a trip into rural North Korea last week and had an interesting
conversation with one of our "minders." The digital camera has taken off
in North Korea but of course computers are not as common. The minder was
asking me how I store my photographs. I explained that I stored them on
remote drives and DVD as well as on the Internet. He told me that he
stores them on his SD cards and prints the photos he needs at a photo
print shop in Pyongyang. He wondered how long the SD cards last and if
anyone else stores them on the cards. I really saw SD cards as a transit
medium. I never really thought about storing them on the cards.
How long would a card last? Does anyone else know of storage on SD cards
in Third World countries?
