Julie and others are correct. I am not aware of any bachelor's degrees in RM
specifically, at least in the U.S. I am aware of a number of graduate
programs in RM, but all of them are outside the U.S. (specifically UK and
Australia - not sure if University of Toronto has a full RM degree). I am
currently enrolled in the San Jose State University Master's in Archives and
Records Management program, which is the closest I've seen to a RM-specific
program in the U.S.
The discussion reminds me a bit of programmer job descriptions in the
mid-to-late 90's requiring 10+ years in Java. As the language was only
developed in 1995, it was obvious that those job descriptions were indeed "a
bit clueless". Not 100% certain that that is the case here because I think I
missed the specific job posting and I don't have the time or energy to look
through the archives.
But I will end this by noting that the ICRM requires a combination of degree
+ professional experience, starting with diploma and 11 years experience and
dropping to Master's degree + 2 years experience. Nowhere in the
qualification is there any requirement that the degree be in RM, library
science, archives, or anything related; in fact, I qualified with a
Bachelor's + 3 years experience, and my BA is in political science.
In other words, pls re-read the job qualifications - if it says "degree in
RM", the employer may be clueless (or expecting that there is such a thing -
and see ARMA's initiatives in that area); if it doesn't, this is all much
ado about nothing.
Respectfully submitted on behalf of myself and no other company,
organization, association, entity, or board of directors,
Jesse Wilkins, CRM
