Most of these stories and studies do not have the impact you really
need.

If they really wanted to know they would hire a consultant.

If you want to know and you think that they might react if your
numbers are dramatic enough, there is a simple program to accomplish
this.

Go to Legal, HR and your department and pull three files from each
department and hide them in your desk. Ask each department to go
through what they would do if they needed these documents and they had
to provide this information. Tell them this is a DR drill or enlist
Risk Management in the test. Ask them to clock their time and the
amount of people involved.

In real time and your organization's rate per hour you will have the
real cost of lost documents. You can do it either with their
knowledge or in a clandestine manner. But in the end you will know
what it costs.

But you are already riding Space Mountain so you may not be interested
right now? ;~)
