This may be true for "Winders" in one of it's current and/or planed
configurations, but you may need to think farther into the future to avoid
the need for renaming and also for other programs.  The ROXIO suite of
backup software does NOT accommodate long file names, and will stop during a
backup and either ask you to remove a file from the process or abort the
backup entirely. QuickTime only allows a 63 character file name to be
processed, so any file names longer than that for motion files viewed in
QuickTime won't work either.

Also, while M$ says it will allow these names, it actually truncates the
lengthy file names in directories to the last unique character if there are
two long file names that are similar, ad the length stated includes all path
and directory information   (see same link Peter provided)
