Some of the high end scanners I have had exposure to use a vacuum
suction conveyor belt system to pass documents, including thermal
paper dockets, through the scanner. They also tend to do it a very
high speed. I agree with the comments that the scan process could
alter the thermal paper but the many that I have seen tend not to have
been affected too much, and they are mostly readable.
