I agree with LarryM's conclusion concerning how much email received is
actually a business record. IMNSHO the problems with email are the following

1. Training - organizations do not provide training to employees on the
email system. This lack of training includes both technical and procedural.
By technical I mean users are not taught how to set up rules, folders, etc
ie how the email client operates. for procedural who should be put on a To
line and who should be put on a CC line, standards for subject lines, how to
construct an email message and more.

2. Usage - I suspect that the vast majority of people use their business
email for private and business purposes. If you want to reduce the volume of
email you have to process each day then use your business email for business
purposes only. you will be surprised at how much more manageable your inbox
will be. and yes I drink this particular brand of koolaid. of course it
means i also have several gmail accounts.
