Good day,

Interesting - more so when you read the article on http://onthehillblog.blogspot.com/ which describes in more detail what the issue is in that Atlantis produces 8.4 million barrels a day. Can you imagine the enormity of an accident?

If one looks at the code clinically then Mr Abbott is not using any confidential, propriety or trade secret information. He is reporting on a regulatory (and what is maybe a transgression of a legal operating requirement) non-compliance which in South Africa is punishable by law (however punitive) and this would have resulted in the facility possibly being shutdown. Are businesses in the US not answerable to the law? Must a worker ignore that fact while being complicit in an illegal activity based on a code of ethics? I think not!

Although I support the Code of Ethics, I do not believe that it negates legal or regulatory (and in some extreme cases moral) requirements.

If I was working for a company and it did something illegal I would have to comply with the law before I could hide behind our Code of Ethics.

< Note also that Mr. Abbott claims that he and another BP manager
attempted to resolve the issue and were "just criticized and pushed
aside".>
With this understanding, then Mr. Abbott was correct in going public with the issue.

I think the CRM ethics are a good baseline for ethical behavior for any RIM practitioner. ARMA's Code of Professional Responsibility is another good baseline, although I was unable to find the Code on the current ARMA website.
