There were stories in the press a year or so ago about pictures of people
turning up in places they shouldn't be or doing things they shouldn't be
doing because they were "serendipitously" captured by Google Maps Street
Cams... well, it turns out they were capturing more than images and GPS
points... MUCH MORE!!!
So it starts with a letter to the FTC AFTER a German data protection
official went public with knowledge it was happening

Then the CEO gets questioned by a Senator and openly admits they knew it
happened, but they've stopped doing it and are 'discarding the data collected'

And while they made a minor admission of a boo-boo on April 27th in a blog
post, NOW they've done a turn-about and given a more serious statement about
the practices

I think it's rich how they're explaining to people in their post how to
secure their networks. What do you think would have happened if someone
from a Foreign Government had been found guilty of capturing data of this
type? I'm amazed the German privacy group who initially raised the issue
are letting it go so easy...
