IMHO the proposed standards should not be readily dismissed. It makes itself
clear that it is not a replacement for 15489 or any other records-related ISO
standards, but works in conjunction with them.
It further emphasizes that, whereas 15489 is intended for records managers
and RM programs, 30300 is intended for organizations and management. Given
that, in a lot of organizations, promotion of the RM program internally is still an
ongoing (and often difficult) endeavor, the standard should be welcomed.
The big test for 30300 will be how widely it is adopted - will upper
management want to get certified against the standard? I'm not sure... an
organization can brag about being certified against ISO 9000, but
(unfortunately) they may not see a lot of value in bragging about 30300
certification. RM isn't as sexy as quality (to the outside world, anyways!).
Perhaps adoption will be greater in the public sector than in the private.
One additional thought: 30300 is more closely related to ARMA's GARP than to
15489. I'm not sure how they will ultimately relate, i.e. whether they work
well in conjunction (where 30300 provides a practical approach to GARP
principles) or whether they will compete with each other.
