John,

For a really nice drive I would recommend taking California 1/US 101 across
the Golden Gate Bridge and up to the Oregon border if you have time - the
views of the ocean are wonderful. One of my favorite areas to see are the
Redwood forests - the trees are magnificent. 101 goes through both Humboldt
Redwood State Park and the Redwood National Forest. If you are looking for
a bed and breakfast you might want to consider the Victoria Village Inn in
Ferndale (http://www.victorianvillageinn.com/index.htm) located about 20
miles of Eureka. A historic inn at a great price.

If you would like more information contact me off-line.
