We've had these here and had them at a prior employer going back to the mid
90s. I never bothered to find out how the technology worked, I just knew it
did.
In the early days, it simply printed (to thermal paper) the content, sort of
like a reducing fax machine... then it printed to plain paper. Now, you can
save the content as some form of image file.
As for how the markers work? Magic....
