In answer to a question that was recently raised about selling one's vote.  This is often done indirectly.  A candidate promises to take action that will benefit one or more voters.  Based on that promise voters vote for that candidate.  However, unlike most commercial transactions this promise is not a contract and is not legally enforceable.  This suggests that it is not legal.
