Hi Samantha!

In order to make suggestions for moving your collection, details about the volume, space, equipment, order, and transport are needed.

Most importantly, what is the volume of your collection in linear feet?
Is the new space comparable to the existing space in linear feet?
If not, is the space bigger or smaller and by how much?
What types of storage equipment do you have (stacks, flat file drawers, filing cabinets, etc)?
Will the existing storage equipment (stacks, flat file drawers, etc) remain the same or comparable to the equipment in the new space?
If not, how will the storage equipment change?
Is there any *general* order (even if it is very broad categories)?
Has a *preliminary* weeding of unwanted (obvious) materials been done?
Will the movers use portable stacks (stacks on wheels) and/or boxes to transport the collection?

Your moving strategy will depend on the answers to the above questions. Feel free to contact me directly.

Subject: Moving a library/archives

Hello all,
I'm a beginning archivist and I just started my first job in which I have
een thrown into a disheveled library/archives that is a part of the
ashington DC Department of Transportation (DDOT). However, before I can
eally begin to start cataloging and archiving any of the materials, they
eed to be moved to our new location in a few weeks. My boss would like my
olleagues and I to devise a plan that the movers can use to pack and move
he many plans, reports, maps, and pamphlets that are in the library,
espite any real organization within the library. Does anyone have any tips
r resources that they could lead me to in devising this plan?
Thanks much!
