I wonder what this means in a deeper social context. Perhaps the deep
reading movement will gain some traction, but it won't change the current
dynamic for most people, especially for coming generations, on how they
consume most of their information. Will organizations that engage in more
deep reading succeed more, given that they have a greater understanding of
issues? Or will organizations that engage in internet data gathering succeed
more, given that they have touched on a broader range? Will individuals who
do deep reading be more valuable, or will they be considered a quaint relic of
the distant past?
I would have thought the deep readers have the clear advantage, but I'm not
so sure anymore. Current society, replete with blogs and Twitter and instant
messaging, seems to favour the wide and shallow reader.
