Having been involved in a few ethical conundrums myself over the years
(though none quite as dramatic as the PG&E situation!) I can personally say
that standing up for ethics is not easy. Your job security, personal
reputation, even personal life and health can be impacted. There's nothing
heroic, attractive or simple about it. Its actually pretty stressful, lonely
and scary to you and everyone you care about.

One thing I can say, though, without exception, is that successful ethical
stances (with, of course, no guarantee at the time that they will
be successful) ultimately result in long term good. That may not
become apparent until years later, and you may be the only person that knows
what role you played, but its a source of enormous personal satisfaction,
self confidence, and even inner peace.
