US district judge retracts ruling requiring government production of
metadata in FOIA requests | ACEDS.org
It is not often that a federal judge withdraws or invalidates an important
prior ruling, especially one backed by a 27-page opinion that extended the
boundaries of the form and format of information produced by government
agencies in response to Freedom of Information Act requests.
But that is what federal District Judge Shira A. Scheindlin did in a
100-word order entered on June 17, 2011. Her action can be viewed as a
victory for the government, which otherwise faced the heavy obligation of
providing metadata in public requests under the Freedom of Information Act
(FOIA).
