Hello - I'm a long-time listener but infrequent poster to the listserv, but I wanted to respond to the discussion about record storage auctions and offer some clarity on Iron Mountain's process and hopefully alleviate any concerns about privacy issues.

When a company goes out of business or stops paying for the storage services we provide, Iron Mountain takes a number of steps to work out payment issues. Although most of our contracts give us the right to destroy records in non-payment and abandonment situations, we follow the provisions of the Uniform Commercial Code concerning our warehouseman's lien, which calls for an auction of materials in these cases. This gives the customer one last opportunity to take back the records before we destroy them. It's important to note that we strictly limit the right to bid to only the customer and their authorized persons -- so private or sensitive information is never put at risk during this process.
