Hello List,

I have an inquiry for the law firm RMs out there ...

I currently have a client who is rolling out Autonomy's Worksite product for
DM, and they are having a really difficult time getting their
Corporate Immigration PG to agree to use it. The reasons cited are many,
but the main two are 1) due to the nature of a corporate immigration
practice, the physical files are easier to use than electroinc files, and 2)
other law firm immigration practices don't use a DMS as a primary storage
medium/facility (the usual - "well Jones, Jones & Jones don't do it, so we
aren't gonna either").

I understand that a corp immigration file is cumulative (meaning each action
grows from the last so previous work is needed to complete current work ...
ex: first is the work visa, then H1-B, then .... and each time you move to
the next phase in the immigration process you want to review the prior
forms, etc.), however I just can't rectify the assertion that it can't be
done eletronically.

IMO, I think the real issues are 1) they are used to using paper, 2) they
are not fans/have a fear of technology (this is a fact already established,
BTW), and 3) they don't have appropriate support staff to manage their cases
in electronic format.

So, what I'm looking for from the community is an idea of whether other
immigration practices have been allowed to remain paper-based when the rest
of the firm is being pushed toward a more "less-paper" way of practice; or,
examples of firms where corporate immigration practices are happily
practicing law in a "less-paper" environment.

Thanks for any replies - on or off list!

Best,
Julie
