For those who did not have an issue but thought "Wow that was close!!" Let's talk about next time you have a pre-warning of an event.

Example:  "The Dam just broke, we have two hours until it hits our area."

Your reaction, take a roll of duct tape and tape the bottom sill plate of the door and up both sides of the door to a height of about 12". No vault door will keep water out of a vault if there is a level above 1/4". If the water stands for any time in the area of the vault, the water will migrate through the walls.  But if you were a good records manager, your first shelf would be 3" to 6" above the floor level so a small amount of water is not an issue.

Example:  It is the beginning of hurricane season and you have time to plan.  Inspect the shelving to make sure your bottom shelf is the required 3" or better yet 6" above the floor level.

Also, look at your drywall, It should have been installed 1/2" above the floor level so water and then mold and mildew would not move into it.  The rubber molding is then glued on to cover the bottom gap.  This is the approved method for drywall install so mopping, slight water spills, etc.,  do not create mold problems.

Also, never let them install carpet in the vault.  Code not not allow it and it is a huge mess when flooding hits it. 

You have one more beach weekend left.  Take the NFPA 232 to the beach and read it.  When you read it after flooding or a fire, it is a thrilling read.

Also pick up a copy of the NFPA Journal for July/August.   It is really scary.
