At times, this gets to be overcomplicated... the venues in past years used
to focus on a location to DRINK that had a common area where people could
hang out press the flesh, yak and catch up with each other. If finger food
was available, that was a plus, but never a requirement.

The peeps involved in association sponsored events have to do what they're
gonna do- the Listserv isn't an "ARMA thing", never has been... it has its
own core group of participants that may/may not be members or involved in
roles that require or expect their attendance at 'formal functions'.

Heck, nothing wrong with finding an open area where you can drink beer and
eat chips, buying a few 12 packs and sittin' around- if you can do this
around the Gaylord without getting arrested/cited for some form of vagrancy
=)

Last year in SF was a PITA- loud, crowded, took over an hour to get seats at
one table and two hours for a decent number of people to get seats... lots
of folks stood around, had a beer or two, said hi to others and split...
seeing as it was in my backyard, I just drove over MIRACULOUSLY found street
parking and walked a block and hung out for a couple of hours... and it was
great to be able to hug/shake hands with old friends, "meet" some new ones
and SHOUT ACROSS THE TABLE at each other =)
