"Being designated as a Certified Archivist is evidence that the holder thinks about the future as well as the present and the past as we realize that some records have continuing value even after serving the purpose for which they were created. If an organization is concerned about its future, it should be concerned about its archives."

I have always enjoyed reading about what certifications are out there that Records Managers can obtain and, of course, there have been more than one such discussion about this on the listserv over the years. I think a lot of what a typical Records Manager does will dictate what certification they can or should go after. I am not an Archivist so pursuing the CA is not something that would help me in my current position. However, I can see the argument whereby having the CA designation shows an understanding of not only the present but the past as well.

I am very interested in the CIPP and the PMP, but I am neither currently a privacy manager or a project manager at my organization, although I have on various occasions led projects.

I do work with inside and outside counsel on E-Discovery so looking into the CEDS is something I have done and I am probably most interested in that one. The cost is a little high at this point for me or my company to swallow so maybe in late 2012 or 2013.

I have seen various people with the ECMM or ERMM designations and I am interested to learn more about how these differ from the CIP designation. I could look at the AIIM website but I would rather hear what Jesse has to say because he always does a great job explaining stuff like that. I looked at the Knowledge Domain for the CIP and there are a lot of interesting subjects including privacy, archiving, DRM, E-Discovery, security, social media, IM, etc. Since the RIM profession seems to be moving more toward Information Governance, then the CIP might be most relevant of them all.

I also obtained the CDIA+ in 2005 which was very helpful at the time because we were engaging various vendors on an imaging solution.

No matter how you look at it, having so many designations and expanding our horizons into different fields can only help the profession as a whole and I am all for new and interesting opportunities.

Thanks, Steve
