Hello RM list,
This is a request from an archivist.
I am surveying a collection of early 20th century legal case files
from a private law firm. Does anyone know who owns the content of
(holds the copyright to) the case files? Is it the law firm who
created them, the clients who paid the law firm to create them, or
some combination of the two? I have found little literature providing
guidance on how to treat the case files, particularly with regards to
U.S. or New York law.
Some collection specifics:
Most of these records date from between 1901 and 1935 (of the
corporations represented i have checked, none are still in existence).
The collection was donated to our institution by the estate of one of
the firm's partners in 1963.
Any thoughts, suggestions, or literature references would be appreciated.
Thanks, in advance,
Philip Heslip
