Hi, Gary!

Isn't this part of the data gathering for your retention schedule? I gather
this information as well as industry or organization-specific information
like whether a set of information is export controlled, is FOIA, security or
privacy issues, etc. when I do a retention schedule as part of the basic
inventory process.

I don't call it a "data map" even though it ends up being the same thing, in
part because the organizations I work with cannot believe that the resources
to create it is so much less than what the law firms, etc. charge for such a
product. It is also a much more usable format.

Records managers have always done something like this through the retention
schedule inventory phase.
