Corrugated boxes do not protect records from water damage.  So even a
sprinkler system will/can do damage to the records.  However, there are
ways to recover water damaged records depending on the severity or volume
of the water.  Highly critical records should be stored in fire protection
safes; but this can be very costly for the large volumes of records that
are typically retained for 7-10 years.  This is where your risk assessment
comes into play:  which records are so critical that they warrant a
fire-proof safe; and which records can you risk exposure to water (i.e.
sprinkler system) and be prepared to implement recovery procedures
immediately?  I am differentiating a fire-proof safe from a fire-resistant
vault, where a fire-proof safe has no internal electricity and will be
completely sealed when temperatures exceed a specific limit.  I know
that Hugh can provide the current details on these.
