I think by hardcopy you mean the physical medium (paper, video, audio, photo) that the information resides on. If we follow iso 15489 a record or group of records can reside on any medium. With electronic records a common term for hardcopy is "born digital." Any record in any medium is subject to various retention rules, which depend on many factors such as business need, legal as in statutory requirements, and enduring value.
