In this rapidly advancing world of technology, I am not too proud to admit how obvious the solution was.  A little alcohol and a cotton swab - and the scanner is as good as new.  Not sure it will last, but it is up and running for a while longer at least.

Bob - thanks for pointing out the obvious (which I certainly hadn't tried).  That is the beauty of having all of these great colleagues!
