Most older x-rays contain a silver emulsion and cannot be thrown in the local dump.  The silver is considered a heavy metal and must not be able to run off into water supplies or streams, etc.  You might contact a local recycler or microfilm service bureau and find out who they use.  Local hospitals or medical centers may also know, although they mostly use digital x-rays now.
