How does someone get the experience and knowledge to be a Records Manager,
what are some of the potential stepping stones?
>>
Hilary,
I am wondering what opportunities exist for you inside the the city's
RM division where you now work part time. What's the likelihood of a full
time position opening in the near future?
What do you do there now? If no actual positions open up, is there an
opportunity for you to take on RIM activities in addition to the ones that
you're doing there already? Use your toehold inside to learn and do as
many functions as you can, regardless of whether or not your getting paid
for it. That way when a position opens up inside or in another
organization, you're better positioned in terms of experience to get it.
In my first RIM job (also in local gov't) I took on tasks and
responsibilities I wasn't getting paid to do, until I was eventually
promoted into that position. Accomplished that twice at that job - left as
County Records Manager. Some stepping stones you make yourself.
You are right to read carefully the position description instead of
just a position title - some smaller companies do want a full records
manager but give the position a lesser title so they can start it at a
lower salary. But those can be stepping stones in disguise. You could get
in there, build out the program, get your CRM, and then be ready to hop on
the next stone. It's all a progression.
Has your networking included your local ARMA chapter?
