What's the best invention that has benefited humanity, in your opinion,?

I guess it's an obvious one for our profession- the recording and preservation of information starting with stone carvings and drawings that allowed humanity to retain, increase, and pass on knowledge. We have suffered significant setbacks as a civilization when that process fell apart or became less proficient as in the European dark ages.

Or course, being in the Midwestern USA I would also have to agree with many others that air conditioning is also a major benefit to humanity. It keeps people safe from life threatening heat and also preserves and protects food and vital medicines from spoilage.
