In a Press Release form the Storage & Destruction Business Magazine they reported that:

 <> <> <> <> <>
> The American Forest & Paper Association <http://www.afandpa.org/>, Washington, has released its August 2015 “Printing-Writing Paper Report.”
>
>
> According to the report, released Sept. 21, 2015, total printing-writing paper shipments decreased 6 percent in August compared with August 2014.
>
> The AF&PA says uncoated free sheet (UFS) paper shipments were essentially flat compared with August 2014, with imports decreasing 29 percent year over year in July.
>
> August coated free sheet (CFS) paper shipments decreased 7 percent compared with August 2014. Imports of CFS papers decreased 15 percent in July, the second year-over-year decrease in the past 12 months.
>
> Uncoated mechanical (UM) paper shipments decreased 13 percent when compared with August 2014. Imports of UM papers were down 16 percent in July, the 13th consecutive monthly decline.

This fits with the trends to immediately move to the Cloud and the recognition that Electronic Records as being viable as a Vital Record, Long Term Record and so on.

I wonder what the printer ink cartridge guys are reporting. Is the use of ink dropping?

The trends in computer tapes are confusing. Yes, tape sales are down but a big part of this is the increase in density per LTO5 and LTO6 and so on. Google recently bought 1,100 Gemtracs to store close to 5 million tapes which probably relates to backing up their Cloud storage as well as their whole internet platform. Will other competitors also start to back up to tape?

Long term storage of seldom accessed data in an online mode is costly so movement to tape makes sense and Google probably is leading the way.

Will a few high level failures of the Cloud force more corporations to store more tape? Will movement to tape be just another service to add to the mix? Keep in mind that tape storage is considerably less costly and much more accurate than online storage. And in the end, the market keeps looking for cheaper and cheaper storage. Movement to tape will be part of that.

But paper is diminishing. Shredding is accelerating. Boxes stored offsite are kept for shorter periods of time and then shredded. And the volume of boxes being moved to offsite warehouses is slowing down annually. Now add to that the fact that less paper is being purchased?? Is the trend to store records as paper offsite decelerating at an even faster pace year over year?

The IT Department now recognizes Electronic Records as a real thing. It is time to have meaningful dialogs on how to protect electronic records at their genesis and begin the process of creating a Data Map. Several in this group have already forged a path and might offer guidance. Few would doubt there is less paper and paper is less important and that is a trend that needs to be discussed.
