Just hours after his appointment was announced, the special prosecutor
tasked with the investigation into the triple delete email scandal
<http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/email-scandal-1.3284856>
surrounding the B.C. government, has withdrawn from the position.

According to the Criminal Justice Branch (CJB), Greg DelBigio, QC withdrew
after conflict of interest concerns were raised regarding his current role
as defence counsel for a former B.C. Liberal Party employee on another case.

Committee to toughen B.C. record rules

A handful of amendments to B.C.'s information and privacy law would force
the B.C. Liberal government to drop most of the dodges it uses to avoid
disclosure.

Information and privacy commissioner Elizabeth Denham landed heavily on the
government last month with a report that exposed the penchant for secrecy
in the premiers' office and various other ministries.

An independent prosecutor is being appointed to see if a B.C. Liberal
political staffer should be charged for lying under oath to the Information
and Privacy Commissioner.

Commissioner Elizabeth Denham referred the case to the RCMP in October
after investigating the deletion of emails by ministerial assistant George
Gretes in Transportation Minister Todd Stone’s office in late 2014. Denham
interviewed Gretes and other staffers after former executive assistant Tim
Duncan made a complaint to her describing deletion of emails that were
sought by the NDP opposition under freedom of information (FOI) legislation.

"The problems of our economy have occurred not as an outgrowth of
laissez-faire, unbridled competition.
They have occurred under the guidance of federal agencies, and under the
umbrella of federal regulations."
Senator Ted Kennedy, in defending trucking deregulation in 1978.
