But the issue with access to digital information over time has much less 
to do with the storage media and much more to do with the data structures,
both those used to encode individual files as Larry described, and to some 
extent those used to describe the manner in which the various files are
stored on the storage media in question. In other words, with reasonable 
storage, your CDs/DVDs will probably last longer than our meaningful 
ability to read the digital documents on them, and the more 
complex/proprietary the file type, the more this is true. Open standards 
can mitigate this somewhat, but probably not entirely.

Thanks Jesse and Larry. So we've established that saving the data in the 
native computer application is not a viable, or at least very good, way to 
save the data long term. So now the question is: If you have data that you 
need long term, what are the methods/systems of keeping it long term and 
also being able read and understand it?
