Many years ago we were required to install one of our vaults that was magnetically shielded for some critical defense function. Then it had to be upgraded to what amounted to a 60 Db attenuation of the RF field. This was not difficult; just a little more time consuming. Some refer to this as a Tempest Shielded Room.

Back in the Cold War our major enemy was capable of placing parabolic dishes near our Embassies and data centers and picking up the transmissions. Since then devices that can pick up keyboard signals have become more prevalent. Those using wireless keyboards (Bluetooth) make this even simpler.

We still offer a shielded room as a standard but few seem to worry about it. That is surprising since we keep reading about Electromagnetic Pulse weapons. (EMP’s)

We typically shield our ServerVaults because the amount of power supplied and the wiring grid create their own fields of disturbance. Even the location of a data center near high line power lines create problems. Lightning storms also are problematic.

Some computers have special shielding in their core but as yet no one is really addressing this issue.

All of our vaults installed for tape storage are shielded because we worry about magnetic fields that could damage the back up media. That seems to be the main area where clients care.

I have not heard of the Cloud Data Centers taking any heroic measures. It is all about delivering storage at the least cost.

I find it ironic that articles like this keep appearing but the marketplace seems to care less and less about security.

But when we do find clients worried about security, they simply cannot find enough.
