Aloha Steve,

Thanks for contributing further to what Don has "thrown on the table." I just want to respond to some of your points (all of them are good and I concur), to give you my "take" on things:

"Right or wrong, young people no longer believe that there is value in face-to-face networking in the age of LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter and association memberships everywhere are falling year after year as a result. "
To a great degree, we are becoming a "google" world where the answer for everything is just a few keystrokes away. Unfortunately, reliance on a "google" mentality creates a "superficial" understanding of how things are created, used, stored, etc. In essence, there is no "foundation" or "substance" as to the "who, what, where, why" that goes with deeper involvement.

"It must also explain where on the corporate hierarchy the two separate professions would be expected to reside."
As you've allude to, is there a need for two separate professions, when many of us perform those roles as "managers" in the corporate structure? Believe me they won't add more seats in the Boardroom...The shortfall of ARMA and our RIM profession is the failure to educate our "successors"...We've bred and educated "technicians" who may not have skillsets to "manage" a records management program and people.

" ARMA could declare 'information governance' is simply another term for the work its records manager members perform"
What a revelation!!! Many seasoned records "managers" do exactly that!

As for the ARMA Conference, I've always tried to find a "morsel" to focus on and bring back to satisfy management's "ROI" for sending me to conference. The biggest benefit has always been "networking" with my peers and "talking shop" about what we're doing to "manage" records in our respective companies. With more of our peers avoiding the conference due to the deteriorating quality of educational sessions, the exposition, and networking opportunities, it's becoming harder to justify the trip and expenses.

I'm not sure I'll be back to the ARMA conference...It will all depend on whether it provides the content and benefit that overshadows "other" conferences such as AIIM, PRISM, MER, etc. It used to be a "no brainer" to go ARMA, but that is no longer the case. Yes, like yourself, I don't need to be force-fed Information Governance when I've worked in that realm as Records Manager for many years.

Mahalo for sharing!

Brian

P.S. If enough of us do say we "agree with Don", will ARMA get the message?
