Hi Michel,

You wrote: ³What industry practice is with regards to disposition of
electronic
   records (specifically data)?²

I doubt you¹ll get a clean answer to this as this is dependent on multiple
factors such as the type of data, the sensitivity of that data, the industry
you¹re in, etc. Even in one company, the rules can vary greatly across
different Data Types.

You wrote: ³Is there an automated event purge of data based on retention
schedule
   without a legal sign-off on destruction?²

There may be exceptions where the answer is ³no.² However, for most cases,
that answer is ³yes.² If your disposition processes and procedures are
clearly documented and made highly consistent, you can use automation
without a signature to handle destruction. Many companies do so. Such
documentation and repeatable procedures helps establish a Defensible
Disposition position for your company. Again, there are certain Data Types
that may need to require formal signatures, though.

You wrote: ³If not, how to build an automated data destruction process based
on retention schedule?²

I suggest considering Orchestration and Workflow Tools (think
ElectricCommander, AutoSys, etc.) that leverage calendar-based Batch
Schedulers and even Rules Engines to run Life Cycle aging and disposition
scripts.

I hope this helps.

Frank
