How should law enforcement officials deal with digital data that happens to be stored in a different country? If FBI agents, pursuing a subject who committed a crime in the United States, serve a valid court order on an American company, the government shouldn’t have to wait a year because the company happens to store the information overseas. Likewise, if the London police are investigating a local murder, the fact that they are seeking phone records from a communications provider located in the United States should not block them from doing their job. That sounds like simple common sense. But in the modern world, law enforcement and national-security professionals are too often forced to use 19th- century tools in a global, 21st-century world. https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__wapo.st_2IbVxFN&d=DwIFaQ&c=pZJPUDQ3SB9JplYbifm4nt2lEVG5pWx2KikqINpWlZM&r=b5NZPQUb9_r2rQ3Zd74ATT3aSs9yKyRnJLOhqJvd7fE&m=9QRWsptJpjA0nPt05wyD64WcTpFHAba8j4m8KnpSclI&s=8VdUlZrQ6n4TEbGo0BjispJbbUk8XUOocj-wRsnYYMI&e= https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__wapo.st_2IbVxFN-2B&d=DwIFaQ&c=pZJPUDQ3SB9JplYbifm4nt2lEVG5pWx2KikqINpWlZM&r=b5NZPQUb9_r2rQ3Zd74ATT3aSs9yKyRnJLOhqJvd7fE&m=9QRWsptJpjA0nPt05wyD64WcTpFHAba8j4m8KnpSclI&s=HeTCdvnrB0gYESbtcx-kRsCALm1zRFPVt1p2NeFxYig&e= -- Peterk Dallas, Tx [log in to unmask] Save our in-boxes! https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__emailcharter.org&d=DwIFaQ&c=pZJPUDQ3SB9JplYbifm4nt2lEVG5pWx2KikqINpWlZM&r=b5NZPQUb9_r2rQ3Zd74ATT3aSs9yKyRnJLOhqJvd7fE&m=9QRWsptJpjA0nPt05wyD64WcTpFHAba8j4m8KnpSclI&s=2jRYf4OMpA3q_375TI9Dhc-lloCJAYOXrsKHL0xxXAw&e= “If only there were a massive entity that I were forced to fund to tell me how I should live my life, since I’m so obviously incapable of deciding for myself.” M.
