Subject: [ARCHIVES] Student Records Legal Retention
To: [log in to unmask]

This is not my usual area of expertise so I turn to my colleagues on
the list...

I have a patron asking if there are any federal laws regarding the
retention of student records particularly transcripts and other
academic records. How long is a school legally required to hold on to
these kinds of records. It is my understanding that there is no
federal legal requirements regarding student records and that this is
generally ruled by state laws but I am really not sure. It has been a
while since I worked in academia. What if the school closes its
doors--are all bets off?

Thanks for any assistance...
