State Historical Society hosting electronic records program

PIERRE, S.D. -- The State Archives, a program of the South Dakota State
Historical Society at the Cultural Heritage Center, will host an electronic
records program on Monday, Sept 19.

Designing an Electronic Records Management Program will be conducted by
Philip Bantin, an associate professor and director of archives at Indiana
University, who specializes in electronic records.

Topics to be covered include:

* What is a recordkeeping system?
* How do information systems function as recordkeeping systems?
* Strategies for creating recordkeeping systems

The program is free, although seating is limited. The program at the
Cultural Heritage Center is from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

"The program is intended to be a basic introduction to developing an
electronic records program," said Chelle Somsen, state archivist.
"Electronic records have become a challenge to archivists, librarians, and
records managers who are trying to develop a strategy and systems for their
institutions in order to handle the ever increasing volume and variety of
digital records."

The South Dakota State Historical Records Advisory Board and the public
identified electronic records issues as a concern throughout the state. The
board is the central advisory committee for historical records planning,
coordinates archival activities in the state, and develops and implements
projects in the state that are funded by the National Historical
Publications and Records Commission.

Conducting the program fulfills one of the goals of the advisory board's
2001 strategic plan to improve public awareness of historical records and
provide training and education opportunities. It also promotes the state's
2010 Initiative goal of advancing history as being essential to lifelong
learning.
