A bit of good news on this:
Not all of Pass Christian Historical Society's records were lost. Some of them, along with some from the City of Pass Christian, were salvaged and are sitting in a freezer truck a couple of blocks from here. Mississippi Department of Archives & History personnel retrieved them about a week ago and will be sending them off for restoration.
The Biloxi Library and the City of Gulfport were able to salvage a number of their books and records and sent them to a Munters facility in Chicago. (this is not a plug for Munters -- that's just who they used; MDAH is using Belfor)
Unfortunately, not everyone was as lucky. Gulfport's cemetery records were kept at a historic home on the beach which is no longer there. Only a few of the recent records were imaged. Other government offices and businesses lost records either from the storm or because they couldn't salvage them in time. I just hope that people learn from this; I'm certainly going to be encouraging our county leaders. Our office wasn't damaged this time, but a "next time" will certainly come!
