On the issue of Water down the plug hole I defer to Dr Karl
(Kruszelnicki) well known down under (a popular Radio and Television
presenter and the Julius Sumner Miller fellow at the University of
Sydney - why is it so! Sorry most Aussies over 40 will get that obscure
reference). Any howback on track.
In his book (the 24th by the way) called Dis Information and Wikked
myths he outlines what is called Coriolis effect (really the
Conservation of Angular momentum) - Imagine an ice skater with their
arms and legs out or alternatively with their arms and legs tucked in
close to the body - the former generates a slow spin the latter a
quicker spin. At either end of the earth at the poles the force is
greatest while at the equator it is 'zero'. That is why in combination
with other factors - the tilt of the earth etc - what Americans call
Hurricanes and the Japanese Typhoons spin anti-clockwise in the
Northern Hemisphere and what us Southerners call Cyclones spin
clockwise (the effect is visible in a large body).
Moving on yes their is an effect on the way water might spin in the
Northern and Southern hemispheres but only in 'pristine' circumstances
because other effects may come into play - the shape of the bowl the
way the water enters the bowl - will counter or react against the
effect.
So there you go a 'what the' moment from down under...
Cheers
