I know it's crazy, but in some cases at least it's an OHS requirement
(because of lawyers). I'm working on a draft position description for a
corporate records manager, and I'm putting in all the high level stuff I can
(degree, RM qualifications, eligible for professional membership of RMAA
etc) but I have to tick the box that says "sometimes involves more than just
sitting at a desk in head office" which automatically leads to a formal OHS
assessment, and insertion of a couple of points that must appear in any job
advertisement (because of lawyers): ability to lift a standard archive box
up to 16 kg, and needs a driver's license. This will probably mean that a
couple of other requirements will have to be omitted for space reasons (eg
experience in RM).
So some apparently crazy requirements are caused by lawyers (sorry, I meant
to type "due diligence, prudence"). But I agree completely on everything
else. I'm trying to avoid ending up with a job ad that requires postgrad
qualifications in RM, QA, IT, and project, change and financial
management, celestial navigation etc at a salary of $18k.
And apologies to all you lawyers, but the amount of stuff we have to go
through these days because of extremely over-cautious interpretations of
diligence and prudence, without any proper assessment of risk (probability
and impact) is amazing.
Terry Pratchett wrote that there must be a law against killing lawyers,
because there are still some left.

These views are mine alone. They may or may not be those of any
previous or present employers or clients. I don't know. If I'd asked
and they'd agreed, I would have signed it "Harry Peck and Co and
Glenn". Or whatever. But I haven't, so I didn't.
