I owe Stephen Smith an apologize for bringing up the discussion on
Certifications vs. Certificates. I was the one who announced the new
AIIM EMM course as one of the Pre-Conference Workshops at the upcoming
AIIM International Exposition & Conference. Any knowledgeable RIM
professional is aware of the difference between the CRM, a professional
certification, and AIIM's education certificates. I would never suggest
that they are comparable.

At the same time, AIIM's education courses and certificates have
considerable value. Doug Allen touched on the Core RIM Competencies
developed by The Core Competencies Working Group of ARMA's Education
Development Committee (EDC). This comprehensive and excellent document
identifies the knowledge and skills required by RIM professionals.

AIIM's education courses provide knowledge and skills building in
support of these requirements. We also recognize that course content
needs to be constantly improved and we will be using the Core RIM
Competencies as a structure to do just that.

The Core Competencies Working Group also comments on the value of
gaining certifications. It should be evident to all members of the
listserv that the CRM designation is challenging to obtain and the
number of CRMs is limited. I believe there is a void in the marketplace
that the AIIM designations fill. The vast majority of my students and
others who have taken the courses have found them very beneficial. The
courses are professionally developed, at considerable expense, and
examined by AIIM's Education Advisory groups in both Europe and North
America. I will leave it to the students to comment on the
qualifications of the instructors.

These designations show peers, supervisors and prospective employers
that the person continues to learn and improve their RIM knowledge and
skills. There are RIM professionals who are resting on their laurels.
For everyone else, in our difficult marketplace, use whatever
designations we can to aid in gaining respect and support within our
organizations and to differentiate ourselves from others in achieving
promotions and higher level positions in our profession.

As an aside, in regards to the order of the designations behind your
name, use whatever arrangement it takes to help achieve your
professional goals. In fact, in the 90s, I made no reference to my CSP
(Certified Systems Professional) and CRM designations as prospective
employers told me that I was over qualified for positions. Some of you
will remember those days.
